THE DAY I MISSED A SCHOOL TEST.
So, the weekend is here and I have confirmed that we will not be having much class on Monday. I packed my bag to go home for the weekend and to come back on Monday of the next week.
Packing my bags and telling my friends goodbye, I set out for an amazing weekend, you know, to spend some time with my family plus free food for the weekend. Let's not talk about the extra cash I will come back with. My heart was racing with excitement. I boarded the keke(tricycle) outside my school to the main park. Paid when I got on the bus, and then, I was on my merry way. On getting home, I was greeted with hugs and shouts plus the delicious egusi soup and fufu( a very delicious local Nigerian delicacy) that were already waiting for me.
"Ah, without further ado;
I pounced on the food, I showed it no mercy. Mummy asked me if I ate in school at all and I told her yes, but the food I eat in school is not as tasty as my mum's food she quickly smiled and gave me more…(in her words I need to add more flesh)
You know how they say the weekend runs. "Yeah, it sure did. Before I knew it, Sunday came, and I went to church with my family. When I got back I noticed three missed calls from my friend(I didn't go to church with my phone). What's it? I wondered and I smiled. Maybe she wanted me to get something for her on my way back. I quickly dialled her number and called.
She picked up on the first ring and told me that I am not online. She dropped a Whatsapp message for me but I have not replied. I asked her what it was. She said we have a test on Monday (the next day) and a group assignment defence of the same course(my group was defending) Omor.. was what came out of my mouth. What time, I asked, and she said 10am. I quickly told her thank you, dropped the line and went in to pack. Later that evening, when my parents got back I explained everything to them. My mum quickly asked me if I didn't verify before coming and I informed her that I did.
How am I going to get to school before 10 am? and be seated, and the journey is roughly an hour and a few mins? I left by 6 am to the park, boarded a bus and we were on our way. We stopped to get fuel and then got onto the express road. The vehicle started having mood swings (stopping and when the driver ignited the engine it started again, a few minutes later it would stop again) Ah, who did I offend this morning? I said to myself(I remembered I said my prayers that morning). We were all asked to alight then, after roughly 30 mins of trying to fix the car to no avail, the driver told us that he will have to flag down another car as he was also trying to call so another vehicle can be sent …
The race started, and any car going in our direction once it stopped, and everyone was racing towards it to enter some were lucky to enter but those who couldn't get spaces came out. My mum called me she asked me to calm down and stop panicking.
Another bus came, luckily I entered. We were like five that entered, I was standing but I didn't care. Getting to my destination was my focus. Immediately, the driver tried to start the car but it refused to turn on, he started it again, but it refused. He immediately asked everyone who just got on the bus to get down and he asked "who came into the car now with bad spirit"("Ah", there's nothing I will not hear today ohhhh which one is this) we were asked to get down. I quietly got down. Immediately, another bus came and there was just a spot at the front. I sat there(I was so grateful that I was slim cause it entered me) the man beside me was kind, he noticed how tense I was and asked me what the problem was. I explained and he told me to relax. I checked my watch-9:55 am, there was no hope.
We got to the main bus stop leading to my school. I didn't want to check my phone because I knew I had already missed both the defence and the test. I got down and took a keke(tricycle) to my school gate. I ran off to the hostel to change into my departmental wear, checking the time it was 10:30 but I noticed none of my coursemates was in the hostel. Maybe the defence is still going on. After changing, I rushed out to the class. I wore my shoes on the way, I didn't even check my face(no time for baby girl face treatment).
I got to my class and I saw my coursemates coming out with their bags hanging around their shoulders and books in their hands"Noooo", I said to myself. Are you guys done? I asked a guy who I saw first ….
"You didn't hear"
Hear what? I asked,
Guess;
'Eh; I asked staring at him in confusion
The test/defence was cancelled,
I didn't know whether to cry, laugh or shout.
So yeah; I didn't miss the test🤛
